How does senior health care in CT compare to health care in other countries? I recently ran across an online article from Select Home Care, a senior home care provider in Pasadena, CA, that reported on a research study that examined the condition of senior health care in the United States compared to that in other countries. The Commonwealth Fund surveyed more than 15,600 seniors in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
The Commonwealth Fund is a private foundation that aims to promote a high performing health care system that achieves better access, improved quality, and greater efficiency, particularly for society’s most vulnerable, including low-income people, the uninsured, minority Americans, young children, and elderly adults.
The research study found the following downfalls for senior health care in the US:
- US older adults were sicker than those abroad.
- Out-of-pocket expenses posed greater problems in the United States than elsewhere.
- Accessing primary care and avoiding the emergency department tended to be more difficult in the United States, Canada, and Sweden than in other surveyed countries.
